Reading Miles

By now many of you will be well on your way to earning a bronze reading badge. As a

reminder, you need to provide evidence of completing 40 reads or more at home during the autumn term. The closing date for counting is Friday 15th December. As you read this, it means you still have seven weeks to go to aim for 40! Good luck and happy reading. Having your Learning Journal or Reading Record in school every day will allow your teachers to see how you are doing and also give yourself time in a morning to fill in your reading at home if you’ve been forgetting.

Healthy Minds

We are happy to tell that our school will be involved in a joint project with Sheffield Children’s and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) called Healthy Minds.

Everyone involved in this project wants young people to flourish and fulfil their potential, and provide a school environment which best supports young people’s emotional wellbeing. 45 schools across Sheffield are involved with this work over the next year.

Key activities offered within Healthy Minds are:

  • Training for all school staff on the fundamentals of young people’s mental health and the implications for learning.
  • A Healthy Minds survey to be offered to students, families and staff to understand the specific needs of an individual school.
  • Developing an action plan for each school based on its Healthy Minds survey. This will cover further training needs, development of PSHE materials or school protocols to further support young people’s emotional wellbeing.
  • Engage student voice through the development of Healthy Minds champions
  • Provide clarity for staff, students and parents about who they can talk to if they are worried about a young person’s mental health.
  • Specialist mental health training for key staff in schools.
  • Mental health consultation with key staff in schools.

Please help us to make the most of this project by letting us know what you think is working well in school and what more you would like for your child regarding their emotional wellbeing by filling in the Healthy Minds survey.

All responses will be anonymous. You can call into school next week any morning 8.30 – 9.30 or afternoon 2.00 – 3.30 to use school computers to complete the survey.

Your child will also be asked to complete the Healthy Minds survey in class. Please contact Claire Bradley or Jayne Senior If you want to find out more about this.

Time For School

If your child was born between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 you need to apply for their school place. You can apply online at www.sheffield.gov.uk/pupiladmissions

The closing date for applying is 15th January 2018. You can contact admissions on 0114 2735766. Please ensure you put 3 school preferences down to ensure that if you don’t get your first choice you have thought about where you want your child to go.

We must remind you that attendance at WCM Nursery does not guarantee you a place in school. This is worked out by the Local Authority based on distance from school. If you need any support with your application or have any questions please call on see a member of our Nursery team or Mrs Bradley.

Pupil Progress Evening

We would like to invite you and your child into school to have a 10 minute meeting to talk together about their learning and progress. We are pleased to be able to offer you a choice of two dates for these meetings:

Tuesday 3rd October between 3.30 and 5.30pm

or

Wednesday 4th October between 3.30 and 7.00pm

These ten minute Progress Meetings will be held in your child’s classroom where you and your child can meet with their teacher(s) to look at and talk about their progress in reading, writing and maths work in particular. Apart from having the chance to meet with your child’s teacher(s), you will be able to review how well your child is doing, talk about their learning targets and about how you can support them at home. We will also be able to talk about how positive they are about their learning.

Your child’s books will be out in the classroom so that, if you want to, you can spend more time afterwards looking at their work.

Please return the letter sent out this week as soon as possible, no later than next Monday 2nd October. The sooner you return your reply slip the more likely you are to have your preferred time.
